eoe-0605-007 c2ea: journey to washington

(LOS ANGELES, POSTED JUNE 17, 2005)

aids protesters tell president bush: "walk a mile In my shoes" -- deliver 8,500 pairs of shoes to white house on may 5, 2005 to to symbolize the number of people worldwide who die of aids daily and to kick off nationwide campaign to end aids (c2ea)

one march

one road

one city

one heart

one cause

one spirit

one destination

one together

—moi

journey with me.

journey with me to washington.

march there with me in october.

travel there with me in the c2ea (campaign to end aids) caravan, across the united states, from sea to sea, over mountains, across the many wheated plains, across the mississippi, through towns and cities and vast wastelands. through history.

come with me. let us follow the tarmac to the streets of washington.

let us answer the call.

the campaign to end aids has called us to march in washington october 8-12. c2ea is a

“nationwide coalition of people living with hiv/aids and individual and organizational allies who band together to end the aids pandemic by participating in and supporting ongoing advocacy and action.

“though solutions must be sustainable,” says the c2ea press release, “progress must be rapid. with the promise of 100 million or more people living with hiv/aids around the world by the end of this decade if no more is done, aids is undeniably a public health and homeland security emergency of the highest priority. we must act boldly, and we must act now.”

come with me to washington.

let us speak to the dwellers there, those who govern, and insist they take action to end this plague. now.

the c2ea is not about medicine or money. it’s about time and injustice.

here is what justice demands of us: we must seek an end to aids for all time and for all peoples. for all nations. for all religions. for all communities. for all kinds of family. for all persuasions. for all incomes. for all our enemies.

hiv is a blight upon the planet. every life it touches becomes filled with pain and torment. my life. your life. their lives. everyone already. aids is sucking us dry.

justice calls us to heal every heart.

we must demand free and equal access to medicines and treatment for every soul. not some.

we must protect the uninfected with the tools of knowledge. not dogma.

every new hiv infection marks a failure in our responsibilities to each other. we must love one another, not kill one another. we must teach one another. we must strengthen one another. we must provide both inner and outer resources for one another. revenge is irrelevant.

justice demands we act quickly. “justice delayed,” said martin luther king, jr., “is justice denied.”

we are called to washington because injustice is in washington. our leaders, the stewards of our wellbeing, are sleeping (at best). we must arouse them. we must tell them the facts. we must recount for them the true story.

every aids death—because of government inaction, because of corporate greed, because of public indifference, because of our own, personal apathies—is another injustice. ditto every new hiv infection. each one is intolerable. we are talking about seventy million dead. a hundred million more infected and waiting. two hundred million intolerabilities, by the time you finish adding it all up. roughly the population of the united states.

join me in washington. donate. sponsor a marcher. (sponsor me!)

we need you.

i need you.

you need you.

arise and struggle.

journey with me to washington.

demand that our leaders:

  • fully fund high-quality treatment and support services for all people living with hiv everywhere in the world.
  • ramp up hiv prevention at home and abroad, guided by science rather than ideology.
  • increase research to find a cure, more effective treatments and better prevention tools.
  • fight aids stigma and protect the civil rights of all people with hiv and aids everywhere.

in 2005, urge lawmakers to:

  • reauthorize and fully fund the ryan white care act.
  • keep medicaid strong for people with hiv/aids and all other beneficiaries.
  • strengthen the global fight against aids by fully funding the global fund and backing 100% debt cancellation.
  • restore and revive effective hiv prevention worldwide based on the best science.
