i would have called this posting log cabin fever (lcf--oh, my god, i have lcf), but the basic metaphor is too powerful and important to pass up for a subtle title.
a lot of people--me included--are profoundly disturbed by log cabin republicans. and angry. and suspicious. i've watched the discussion sizzle on various blogs. i watched most people avoid the log cabin republican booth last week at gay pride. and on and on. today i finally figured out why.
these are not just gay persons, or msms, or homosexuals, or even just bisexuals who happen to be conservatives.
log cabin republicans are political barebackers.
they are on the down low.
i keep making the mistake of trying to figure out why. i have to remind myself that's not as important as recognizing what they're doing. unmasking them and revealing them as the villains that they are.
i am a villain. i have barebacked. i have betrayed the ones i love. this is self-knowledge that i am ashamed of, but it is self-knowledge that keeps me awake. i know villainy from the inside out. i know it when i see it in others.
log cabin republicanism is a sickness of spirit. it is no more choice than aids is choice. should i have it? should i not? should i tell? should i not? what looks good on me?
log cabin republicanism is villainy. it is betrayal. it is treachery. it is treason to our hearts and to our community--not patriotic treason, but poisonous treason. if left unmasked, undiagnosed, it will be the death of us.
log cabin republicans want to screw us and infect us and pretend it's ok. but we're not talking about something that's happened already. we're talking about letting them in the door.
i will not have intercourse with or tolerate unsafe contact with log cabin republicans.
it isn't a question of working from within the system, either. our current administration wants to kills us. we are standing at the beginning of a kind of genocide of convenience. like a marriage of convenience.
and we shouldn't mistake this as part of some kind of dialog between liberals and conservatives.
what is the infection? it boils down to this question: shall we live in justice or shall we live in greed? do we, as individuals, as a community, as a body politic--do we believe we have a duty to comfort the oppressed and bust the oppressors? or do we have a duty to make the world safe for the accumulation of material wealth?
i will make this part easy.
you cannot have the wealthy without having the poor. you cannot have the very wealthy without having the very poor. the rich live on the backs of the needy. those are verifiable facts. i like what patrick moynahan said on the annenberg fact check website: you have a right to your own opinion, but you don't have a right to your own facts.
should what's right and good take a back seat to the stockpiling of material wealth? or should we expend material wealth in the pursuit of justice? is there such a thing as cheap justice?
those of us who have infected other people with the aids virus share a common issue with those of us who are log cabin republicans: we are not sure of the difference between goodness and pleasure. and none of us will figure it out as long as we're getting screwed.
being rich doesn't make up for being gay. having lots of nice stuff won't keep anyone from dying.
we should work on this together.
